Do the instructions in the Info Centre under "unattended (silent) installation" not meet your requirements? If so, what additional requirements do you have?

Unless a technical author wanders past, I doubt you're going to get anything better out of us..... 
I'd recommend you link up with your site Windows Admin, who may have more experience with the Microsoft installer product. Show him the Info Center item and see if he can clarify it, perhaps with diagrams. I find diagrams very helpful, but almost impossible to draw on the board.

As per the docs there are 2 ways to carry on silent installation
1. MQParams_silent.ini
2. response.ini
which is the better one...and where do i make the changes for the same |

The better one is the one that works for you, is easiest for you to understand, and fits in better with the normal practices of your organization (or client's organization).
For a beginner, who really shouldn't be configuring a silent install, the best bet is to go with a Response File. You can run the GUI installer in the normal manner, but instruct it to create a response file instead of performing an installation.
Then the installation will proceed in exactly the manner as specified in the GUI, when you run the installer with the output response file.

I suggest you read the Quick Beginnings manual as it gives a full and detailed section on silent installation.

I want to perform silent install on windows 2000 for MQ6
I am runing the following command
MSiexec /i "<path>\MSI\IBM WebSphere MQ.msi" /L*v "E:\Install_logs\MQ_silent_install.log" USEINI="E:\Response.ini" /q
but it doesnt install
if i remove the "/q" option from the above command it works properly
Can someone please help me. |

The "/q" is in the wrong place prehaps?
Shouldn't it be with the "/i" ? |

/i is used to give the pacakage name
and if i dont give a /q...then the GUI pops up. then what is the use of response.ini
I wanted it to be a silent install without any intervention |
