Glad to see you like the modification! 
Some other changes I have made to my own board:
- search option for 2 days in addtion to the 1 day, 7 days, 2 weeks etc (very easy small change!)
- e-mail notification for new posts or replies to selected forums (this is a bigger change, but very effective for people not visiting MQseries.net on a regular basis)
- I have seen samples (not actually implemented) of Helpdesk style templates to posts so a user can specify what OS, what software, what version, what language he/she is using, etc.
since running my own board I took some time to dig into phpBB a little

Have you figured out how to make the search button more prominent?

I don't think it matters how prominent you make it. People either look for it or they don't.... |

This is the default mini search button
and this is the larger version...
it could make a difference...
On my own board (which is in dutch) I just made the change in a couple of seconds so you can have a look
