Uh, really? In my keyboards, two keys to the right of the L-key is the " (double) and ' (single-) whatever you want to call them. They've been there for years.
Are you saying that my keyboards are abnormal? |
He's saying that typographically, the ' is not a quote. A quote has to be curly. If it's straight, then it's a prime or a double-prime, not a quote or a double-quote.
I realize it's unusual for people to be overly pedantic here. |

I was shooting for underly pedantic. I missed it, I guess.
I suppose we should refer to the # symbol as the octothorpe key in future posts. In German(y), the @ symbol is called Affen Schwanz (monkey's tail).

As one of those who won the lottery of life, i.e. born an Englishman, and coming from the country what invented the language - have a look at the original Shakespeare and punctuation (of any variety, and spelling come to that) was optional, and interchangeable, therefore call 'em anything you like, and it's probably still correct. 
Now digging a VERY big hole to hide in from the undoubted incoming...

So was I, and my idea of a lottery win is very different. Mostly involves a lot of money, and renouncing my UK citizenship if favour of a warm country with lenient tax laws.

That's not quite true either. Whether they are curly or not, (or slanted or not, etc.), depends more on the font than the actual character definition.
Character names are defined by various standards, such as the ISO-based standards (ASCII/8859/Unicode), or the IBM CDRA. Different quote-like characters may look similar, but have distinctly different roles.
The following punctuation characters are common to ISO-8859 code pages, (the first three of which are common to US keyboards):- Unicode U+0022: 'APOSTROPHE' / IBM: 'Apostrophe'
- Unicode U+0027: "QUOTATION MARK" / IBM: "Quotation Marks"
- Unicode U+0060: `GRAVE ACCENT` / IBM: `Grave Accent`
- Unicode U+00B4: ´ACUTE ACCENT´ / IBM: ´Acute Accent´
The following typographical characters are common to MS Windows code pages:- Unicode U+2018: ‘LEFT SINGLE QUOTATION MARK‘ / IBM: ‘Left Single Quote‘
- Unicode U+2019: ’RIGHT SINGLE QUOTATION MARK’ / IBM: ’Right Single Quote’
- Unicode U+201C: “LEFT DOUBLE QUOTATION MARK“ / IBM: “Left Double Quotes“
- Unicode U+201D: ”RIGHT DOUBLE QUOTATION MARK” / IBM: ”Right Double Quotes”
But none of the above should be confused with the following mathematical/linguistic characters:- Unicode U+2032: ′PRIME′
- Unicode U+2033: ″DOUBLE PRIME″
- Unicode U+2035: ‵REVERSED PRIME‵
- Unicode U+2036: ‶REVERSED DOUBLE PRIME‶
... or these CJK symbols:- Unicode U+3003: 〃DITTO MARK〃
- Unicode U+301D: 〝REVERSED DOUBLE PRIME QUOTATION MARK〝 / IBM: 〝Left Double Quotation Mark〝
- Unicode U+301E: 〞DOUBLE PRIME QUOTATION MARK〞 / IBM: 〞Right Double Quotation Mark〞
- Unicode U+301F: 〟LOW DOUBLE PRIME QUOTATION MARK〟 / IBM: 〟Low Double Prime Quotation Mark〟

Sure, why not? Just don't confuse it with the Chinese character 井, or the musical symbol ♯.  |
