Man am I asleep at the wheel or what.
I saw this discussion before but it just didn't register. I hadn't noticed any change, so I just thought this was just some goofy thread.
This weekend I used IE on some else's PC and I was surprised to see the google ads. When I got home tonight, I fired up my browser and the google ads were gone again. I logged in and out of mqseries.net and no ads. So, I figured Brandon was testing google ads stuff.
Then it hit me. Duh!! One of the main reasons I use Maxthon web browser is because IT BLOCKS ADS!! Duh!! Sure enough, I fired up IE and there were the google ads. So, I'll go bury my head in the sand again.
I also noticed that my MQ Visual Edit google ad is appearing on certain web pages. In case you were wondering, NO, I did not place this ad to be obnoxious at mqseries.net. I have been running this google ad for 1-year now (standard search stuff). It just so happens that it matches here for obvious reasons.
Regards,

Well, the point of having the ads at all is to get people to click on them (because I don't get anything if people just look at them). As it turns out, extensive human/computer interaction studies have shown that you're more likely to click on the ad if it's on the left side than if it's on the right side (at least so says Google). I really would like to make these as unobtrusive as possible, but of course that will make them less effective. I'm just trying to cover costs here, and unfortunately donations alone don't cut it. Not that I don't appreciate the donations people have made, believe me, I'm very grateful. It's just that it's quite sporadic and the Google ads at least offer some hope of consistent income to cover the consistent web hosting fees _________________ Brandon Duncan

The real problem for me is...
Work completely blocks the Google ads. So despite my own inclinations to click through... I can't.
And with them on the left, I'm, umm, left with a lot of "leading" spaces.
And it is distracting. _________________ I am *not* the model of the modern major general. |

Interesting research, when the ads appeared on the right I look at them and sometimes think "hey interesting, let's see where this leads me...", my first reaction when they appeared on the left "what the .... are those ads doing there! and was totally distracted from the "content". _________________ Michael

I can confirm Dag's experience with my own - I've never consciously noticed the ads before, and if you were to ask me if there are any ads on MQSeries.net I'd say "no, none that I could see" (I saw them, they were so out of the way and textual that I disregarded them as content ); but *immediately* after the "great switch", I felt it was taking up my entire page.
Alas, we are all researchable monkeys... |

All,
If you are truly bothered by the Google Ads then you should download and install Maxthon.
http://www.maxthon.com/
I've been using it for almost a year now and I really like it - tab browsing, ad blocking, etc... and best of all, it is free.
