AFAIK India didn't EXIST two hundred years ago, the whole Indian sub-continent was split into small and not small statelets - correct me if I'm wrong. And wasn't the separation of Pakistan and India the only workable compromise Mountbatten could come up with? Hey, I've seen Gandhi - I know what I'm talking about! |

The UK was responsible for the division of India based on religion ( their infamous divide-and-rule policy) and the bitterness between India/Pakistan never ends.
|
The division of India was forced upon the British by the intransigence of the Muslim League, led by Jinnah, who would not agree to a united India after independence. The British and the Congress party led by Nehru were against partition. In particular, Gandhi, the father of Indian independence - and IMO the greatest man of the 20th century (maybe another thread coming up...) - was bitterly against partition.
I am not saying that the British did not employ divide and rule tactics during their rule over India, just that such tactics were not used at independence and partition.

At the time of Indian independence India was governed in 2 different ways. There were the provinces which were directly ruled by the British, and there were the 500+ princely states, where the ancient rulers, Maharajahs etc, held power under the paramount power.
India was unified under the British, who relinquished power to the Indian and Pakistani people via the recognised leaders as voted for in the last elections held (pre-war).
India was partitioned by the direct wishes of the Indian Muslims expressed through their political representatives.
