Is there a rule of thumb here? If you had 10 QMs on 10 different servers which themselves might be a variety of different platforms and wanted to cluster them all, would it make a difference what versions of MQ they have? Is there anything specific to older/newer versions of MQ that prevent them from being in the same cluster? _________________ Peter Potkay

I think the official answer is, any version of MQSeries which supports clusters can cluster with any other version of MQSeries which supports clusters. However, in practice, I had quite a time clustering 5.1 and 5.2 queue managers. But I think this was due to the instability of clustering in 5.1 to begin with, rather than the fact that they were trying to communicate with 5.2. What specific platforms/versions are you considering clustering? _________________ Brandon Duncan

Well, past experience tells me to be leery of that 5.1 queue manager, but I think the IBM guys will tell you that it should work just fine. Perhaps with the latest service patches, it will. _________________ Brandon Duncan

Hmmm, doesn't look like OS/400 is supported at all, based on the list of platforms in Concepts and Terminolgy in the clustering handbook.

I just wonder if the argument "We shouldn't cluster all our platforms just because they are different platforms" is a valid arguement. Or if it was 2 years ago and not anymore? _________________ Peter Potkay

				Peter,

I haven't checked the documentation that you refer to but we certainly have OS/400 (5.1) queue managers in our clusters - along with AIX (5.2), NT (5.2.1) and OS/390 (2.1), without problems.

Regards,

I may be wrong but I think this refers to the AS/400...

WebSphere MQ for iSeries, V5.3

They use AIX rather than pSeries though! |
