I've just tried this out on my own box, and it seems to work for me. I pasted your ESQL from the browser directly into my flow, so I'm fairly sure that I'm doing the same as you did.
The only possible difference is in the namespace of the root tag - the MRM parser makes it difficult to see from the user trace. I assumed that the root tag had no namespace.
If you send me your email address in a private message, I will send you a project interchange file containing my message set and message flow.
