newcomers are great, it's shows MQ is getting more and more mainstream on the other hand even Jeff must get bored one day answering all these 2035, 2033, etc type questions

It's not only jeff that's getting tired with these questions, but all of us - me, nigel, peter, fjb, wayne, bower, eddie, roger and more (apologies if I forgot someone) - all of the main "help the newbie" posters

Add me

There is already a FAQ forum and I have been trying to keep it as clean as possible!

Maybe it should be moved to the "top" of the forum list just under General Discussion (otherwise we get all kinds of newbie posts in the "first" forum as we have seen in the past... he... been here for a while...)

That in combination with the bigger search button and the TT threads in the FAQ forum is what we can do.

I still feel a "flood gate" popup could be usefull for new users, let's say the first 5 posts...

Quality and content is good, let's try and keep it that way and not become the biggest 2035 solution bin in the universe.

I am here to learn from other peoples experiences, every day and wasn't planning on leaving any day soon.

and if all fails we can resort to keep our spirits up by talking about our favorite car of the past...

If some people can commit to help managing the FAQ, I can certainly move the FAQ forum up higher in the list. I've seen other sites use the FAQ to great success, and perhaps putting a disclaimer at the top of the "start new thread" page to say "have you already looked in the FAQ and used the search tool?" could go a long way...

I know it's a purely selfish approach, but that's what I've been doing for a while. Sorry guys.

I keep telling myself I used to be a newbie as well, and did (maybe still do) ask silly questions myself.

But some people are really stressing it!

It would make me feel really sorry if that would cause some people saying good bye to this forum.

I was a newbie myself sometime in the year 2000, and although I was aware of this forum, I did not post a single post - even then everything could be found on the web, in the manuals or behind the search button...

I think every such TT should be moderated by a different person, who will get rid of duplicates and unrelated posts, so sebastian - once I get this thing on the road with one or two such threads (will hopefully have some time this weekend) you can take any topic of the list that you want, and start filling it up with useful links you dug up from your past; just let me know and i'll create the initial structure, agreed?

If someone has a special affinity to some topic, say so now and he shall be rewarded. Dibs on logging! (quick, before Peter calls it! )

Ok, just went over all posts with log* from the year 2005 (around 2000 of them, uch!), and my head is swimming, so I apologize if there are typos or incoherencies
Had a few mini-insights: First off, the amount of repeating questions is staggering, and I mean exactly identical, no nuances - I don't know how many times I read the answer to "how do I move the logs". Second, Found a few more possible TT topics:

1. CSD and version discussions and known problems.
2. Pub/Sub
3. Service Packs
4. General Design, Performance and Administration Tasks (server .vs. client, how many qms , naming conventions, backout queues, backup and recovery - saveqmgr, backup oam and file system etc, performance improvements)
5. Misc tasks (clear open queue, duplicate message, use sample progs)

Was also wondering on which TT to put the following: Syncpoints and UOWs, two-phase commit global transactions, failover/workload with MSCS and similar (in design TT?), any suggestions?
I think no matter how we set this up, there will be duplicates, but i'm trying to narrow them down and make it as intuitive as possible... Of course even with duplicates, every TT has a different approach - for example, while "common tasks" will have a general description of how to back up a QM, it will not have an in-depth description of "how to use saveqmgr".
(Oh, while i'm at it, I shall here make clear that we should not add "read the manuals" post links to these Topic Threads, I think this is a given.)

That's it, I found some very good posts about logging (around 20 or so), after I go over them again and sift them a bit, I shall create the first TT.

I was reading the forum for a couple of months before I had my 1st post and from then it took another big while untile I tried to do my first contribution (I failed missearably. Peter might remember ).

Put me on Dead Letter Handling and Triggering. I wanted to put some HowTo's together on this subjects for my homepage anyway, and would be glad to provide them here.
In return, I would hope somebody is volunteering correcting my bad english language in the doc's

Basically, I don't think we'll need a real moderator for these forums, just someone who feels that he's responsible for that thread, and keeps an eye out for good links to post. If you think it necessary, then he will be named as the "TT keeper" at the top of the thread, but nothing more - for read moderation (deletion etc) we shall take aid from the forums moderators(in Links forum - duncan and michael), if it's alright with them.
I'd offer myself as the uber-keeper but university starts in a week and i'm not sure I will have sufficient time (work+uni+a taste of life = little WMQ time ), besides, the IT market taught me one thing - to delegate, especially in a volatile population as an online forum I guess i'll settle for as a keeper of a few good threads...
Thanks Butch and Sebastian, if you wish to help just start collecting useful links you remember from your past and from current affairs.

On a completely different note - Bradon, what do you say of the suggestions for a bigger search button and newbie "flood gate"?

(and on another note, in the forums pull-down list, the WBI forum is still called WMQI - which is a name no one uses...)

I haven't already volunteered to help with this? Weird.

Lemme know what I can do.

I would like to suggest, that installing a MQ CSD (nowadays FP) on Windows should be added to the list...

I think most of us have some exciting things to tell about this

Ola!

Just launched the great TT project WMQ TT \ Master (FAQ main), was far more work than I had bargained for, but the grunt-work is done; at last we can get down to business.
For now, there's only the logging TT, which I filled out with some tasty logging morsels for your reading pleasure; all those who offered their help, it's time to come forward, just say "I want the triggering thread" and I shall open it. You don't have to post as many links as I did, just need a few good links for starters, and the rest we will fill out in time. You can see the topic list in the master TT.
Btw, I am aware that most of the links I put up have me in them, those are the posts I could find, if you have better ones, i'll be glad to replace my own.

There's a TT I called "The begginer MQAdmin - what to read, where to look" which I realized isn't really a TT - I thought maybe we could compile a conscise list of instructions for the newbie - a list which manuals to read and how deep, a list of useful redbooks, support pacs etc. Is anyone willing to do the honors?

Anyway, any offers are welcome, would appreciate it if you do a bit of QA for me.

Cheers,
An exhausted yet merry hops.

I'll do the triggering thread, since I wrote the FAQ for triggering anyway.
