Take out the DOCTYPE line (line 2) so that you can view the exported file in IE. IE will tell you where the problem is. If you're having the same problem I had, then you'll probably see an xml newline ... |

Thanks Guys,
Ended up that this was a firewall issue and sysadmin had closed access to all ports on the box other than a select few like 1414 .... D'oh!!!!!
The concept should work fine.
