Hi All,

I have been asked to look into the possibility of installing MQ-SERIES
(or any other product that can provide the same functionalities) on
our Himalaya in order to communicate to MQ-SERIES on Unix and IBM box.

Several queries I can thing off currently are:

1. What is MQ?
2. Any known problems for MQ-SERIES on Tandem?
3. Any known problems for BASE24 - MQ-SERIES interface (as both on
Tandem)?
4. What are the advantages and weakness of MQ-SERIES compare to other messaging format such as ISO8583?
5. What is the advantage of running MQ on Tandem compare to other boxes?
6. What kind of performance, reliabilities, scalebility and issues should I expect for having MQ on tandem?

Any help you can provide will be greatly appreciated.

Hi,

MQ means Messaging and Queuing. It means that applications communicate with each other using meessages.Queuing means messages are temporarily stored in a queue till other application read them.It is just like email.Email is between two persons. The mail is stored on a mail server, and whenever the recipent wants he can read it.So is true in MQ.Its an asynchronous way of communication between applications. The two applications may otr may not be active.

I have experience on IBM MQSeries on Windows NT/200.For all your queries download pdfs from "www.ibm.com/software/ts/mqseries" mqseries site.
I recommend that you read
1. "MQSeries An Introduction to Messaging & Queuing" pdf
2. MQSeries Primer pdf

Read Appendix I of Application programming guide pdf for functional comparision amongst different flavours of MQseries on different platforms.

You can download all this from above url feee of cost.

1. What is MQ?
The MQSeries planning guide might b your best bet: http://www-4.ibm.com/software/ts/mqseries/library/manualsa/csqzab/csqzab.htm

2. Any known problems for MQ-SERIES on Tandem?
I don't have much personal experience on the Tandem implementation so I can't comment. But a search on IBMLINK might reveal something in that regard. Generally speaking, MQ is a very stable and reliable product, but I wouldn't say that it's problem-free. The advantage is that it has a HUGE user-base in the MOM market so real problems tend to be fixed quickly. From your interest in Tandem and your mentioning of ISO 8583, I suspect that you work for a financial company. There are some good references of MQ customers in that segment, for example the Chicago Mercantile Exchange. I guess that gives you an idea, too.

3. Any known problems for BASE24 - MQ-SERIES interface (as both on Tandem)?
Can't comment due to lack of knowledge.

4. What are the advantages and weakness of MQ-SERIES compare to other messaging format such as ISO8583?
You can't compare the two things. MQ is a transport mechanism, ISO 8683 is a message protocol. Simply said, you can send a ISO 8583 formatted message between systems using MQSeries. MQ doesn't care what the layout/format of your message payload is.

5. What is the advantage of running MQ on Tandem compare to other boxes?
If you have Tandem applications that need to send(=PUT) or receive(=GET) MQSeries messages, you will need to have MQ installed on Tandem. One of the many advantages of MQ is its platform support(>30) so if you need to do cross-platform communications, it is one of your few choices; especially if you need assured once and only once message delivery.

6. What kind of performance, reliabilities, scalebility and issues should I expect for having MQ on tandem?
For a performance report, please see: http://www-4.ibm.com/software/ts/mqseries/txppacs/mpt1.html

For the other issues, my 'I can't comment' statement applies.

Hope that gives you some pointers to start at.
Have fun!!!!!!
Stefan

MQSeries is not a message format. It is messaging middleware. It can transport any message format with a high degree of platform independence. It offers asynchronous messages so that you can decouple applications in time and space if needed (but you don't have to). It runs on about 35 platforms. It is simple to program with (unlike using IP directly).
