I was in a meeting today with some project and development folks. One of them said, "The other developers want to know what you intend to do about the situation where MQ is down."

The participants, at hearing this question, actually laughed out loud. Someone said, "MQ never is down" and heads nodded.

Naturally, at this point I did a modest disclaimer that the MQ infrastructure is subject to downtime like any other.

It's nice to have such a good image with the customers, eh? Which is easy, with a product like MQ.

It's a tribute to your skills.

And So It Came To Pass:

That the unworthy did gather, and complain that MQ was often down;
And there was a great sigh
And the Trout Of Teaching did swing upside their heads
And they were made worthy, and complained no more.

Yes - it's in front of the planning committee and focus group at the moment.

MQ being up and MQ perceived as being up are not always the same thing. Copy and paste from an actual ticket today:

Quote:

Hi,

I am currently facing a problem while submitting policies through SOA tester and Desktop tester. The log shows the MQ series error code as 2033 so we presume that MQ series in UNIT/IMT region is down.

Can you ask the MQ team to get the MQ up.

Please let me know if you require any further info.

Thanks

Of course they submit it as an urgent ticket at 4 AM our time for a nice wake up call. And its not an isolated occurance. Its getting worse as they get rid of more and more people that knew what was going on.

Put down the Trout Of Teaching, and pick up the Trout Of Punishment.

Would you like an FDC with that? Or make it a meal for only $1 more?

This should appear as a line item on your invoice in exactly this form:
20 days consultancy@ £xxx
1 Trout of Punishment @ £xxx

Job done

The dreaded 2033 and MQ being down is our daily bread and butter in this part of the world. Job security is a really nice feeling.

There's a delicate balance between job security and proper sleep.

This requires a proper balance between the trout of enlightentment, the trout of punishment, and "miracles" in which hours seem like days.

The trout, the whole trout, and nothing but the trout.

So what do you call a PMR fix? The Trout of Grace?

You guys are cracking me up.

I've certainly had my share of new developers calling me, saying "we got a 2033! a 2035! a 2058! MQ is down!"

But they only do it once. I employ a judicious mix of the Trout of Indignation and the Trout of Shame.

If they understand nothing else, they quickly come to understand never to start a communication with the words "MQ is down".

With that said, I will add that my favorite aspect of MQ administration is troubleshooting, even when it is a bit silly.

I can't be the only one whose client (with web-based app) called to complain that the internet is down...
