I am trying to determine how big a cluster can be. We all agree that we can have 10 queue managers in a cluster. How about 100, 1000, 10,000? What are the considerations, how many is too many? etc etc

If anyone has real world experience and is willing to share, I'd be delighted to hear.

The largest cluster I have seen is comprised of approx. 2400 queue managers running on AS/400 machines. The system is not production yet so the jury remains out on this as to whether or not it will perform acceptably.

Wee doggies, 2400 queue managers running in 1 cluster? or in several clusters? What kind of message volumes will these queue managers have?

2400 queue managers - sounds like a retail operation. e.g. 1 queue manager per store.

Could we get a status report 6 months after it hits production?

later
Roger...

Roger,

Actually its a US Federal Gov't department with one queue manager per county office.

I'd be happy to report back to the list once it hits production and volumes ramp up.

Does anyone have any information on the maximum number of queue managers that MQ can accommodate in a cluster? The platform is W2K.

To be fair the problem normally isnt the number of qmgrs in the cluster as such (mostly you are then just using memory in the cluster cache), its more you need to think about now many concurrent channels will be running and finding ways to handle odd situations.

An example would be a cluster of 1000 qmgrs, if the full repository cluster receiver changes, it will want to publish the info to all 1000 partials - do you really want that number of channels starting together, all sending one message, then ending...

Another example is if you have lots and lots of cluster channels running at the same time, and the network drops - there's a lot of eror reporting going to go on, and recovery time can be impacted.

There's a support pack talking about large clusters and performance I believe which mentions some of the issues.

We currently have a production cluster with 2 FR's and 265 PR's.
We are aiming to eventually have +- 600 PR's.

We have only had one serious problem which I described in this post: http://www.mqseries.net/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=39936.

At that stage we had 118 PR's. Other than that we have not had any major issues.

One thing to note though, it took a relatively long time for all the administration messages to propagate through the cluster once I introduced the new FR to the cluster.

We are now at 660 PR's qmngr's in a cluster.
Does anybody know of a larger one?

We are now at 744 queue managers in the cluster.
Still waiting to see if there is a bigger one around.

skydoor,
And you only have 2 FRs, right? I want to be able to point to this post anytime someone says they have more than 2 FRs.

That's right, only 2 FR's.

Have a look at the discussion at Hursley on the similar topic.

I agree with the author of the article regarding the amount of messages that travels between the FR's. I lost a FR once, due to my own stupidity, during an upgrade. After I had recovered the FR, which was a mission on it's own, it took more than three hours for the new FR to recover all the cluster information. And that was when we had very few qmgr's in the cluster. I can't imagine how long it will take now.
