IBM Annonuced the WebSphere MQ v5.3
Lots of updates
1) queue size up to 2 Tera Bytes from 2GB
2) 1.5-2.5 times faster Persistant messages
3) Support for wildcards in setmqaut command
4) dis qstatus now available on distributed qmgrs
plus many manymore.

All Platforms will be out in either June or Oct this year. They told us which ones were which but AS/400 was not one of my concerns so I didnt write it down.

I was at the confererence... they anounced
V5.3 NT/2000, SUN, AIX, HP-UX Available June 2002
XP, OS/400 October 2002.

MQ assuring once only message delivery. I have heard that v5.3 also gurantee message sequence. Is this an added feature or just in someone wish-list?

I dont think delivery sequence can be guarnteed due to TCP/IP out sequence possibilities, however there is MQ option MQGET LOGICAL_ORDER.

The biggest new feature I've learned about is that channel can utilize SSL security. This feature is enabled at the 'channel definition' level, not from the application, so recompiling is not required! This provides a secure method to transport messages over the internet.

Yes, SSL is probably the biggest feature of 5.3. I think it will have a huge impact.
And Jeff, as far as what you said about logical ordering, that parameter only works if the messages are part of a logical group. I just point that out because many times people want to process messages in the exact order that they were MQPUT'ed, but don't bother to put them in a logical group. Of course, sometimes the nature of their architecture doesn't permit it, in which case there is always the possibility that TCP/IP will mix things up. But personally, I've never seen that happen (and I've even tried to do it in an experiment).

Hi ,
I agree that SSL is going to be the biggest feature with support for public/private keys ( Hurray!!! I can integrate our Bank's PKI with MQ and also the current Security Module which uses symmetric keys and hashing).
There are also good features like:
1. JMS packaged with the S/W
2. API Crossing Exits (Good to know we can do MQI calls in an exit too)
3. Wildcards in "setmqaut" (Which I longed for, but had to write my own
stuff since V5.1 and 5.2 didn't support that)
and much more ...

I switched my system to the IBM GA version of MQSeries 5.3. First impressions are that it was painless. It migrated my V5.2.1 queue managers without incident.
I haven't had the opportunity to experiment much with any of the new functionality but so far so good.
It is interesting to note that Java/JMS (was MA88) is now provided with the base product and appears it will be the latest version as opposed to a Supported Support pac download.
The docs have all changed as well ... no more MQSeries ... long live WebSphere MQ. |

To clarify the point about logical ordering, I cannot imagine TCP/IP mixing up the MQ Series messages. I think that it is not possible.
The first argumentation is to say that TCP/IP and MQ Series work on different layers.
Let me make a parallel with e-mails. When you send e-mails, you are not sure of the order of arrival of the e-mails, but you are sure that the mail content is not mixed up by TCP/IP. Why? Because different mails are sent in different sessions. However one single mail is sent in one TCP/IP session, it is the role of the TCP/IP layer to put the communication packets in the correct order if they have been mixed on the network, this feature is transparent to the target application.
Back to MQ Series, when a channel is up the sender and receiver agents maintain a TCP/IP session open and thus have no problem of mixed messages (or even message content).
The second argumentation is to say that MQ Series maintains a message sequence number at the channel level to allow the synchronization in case of restart.
The document "MQ Series Intercommunication" says:
> The channel uses sequence numbers to assure that messages are delivered, delivered without duplication, and stored in the same order as they were taken from the transmission queue.
> MQ Series messages are processed in sequence if:
- they are produced by a single application
- they are consumed by a single application
- they were all put either within UOW or outside UOW (no mix)
- they have same priority
- they have same persistence
- MQ Series configuration is such that there is only one path to the destination
- no message is put in dead-letter queue
- the consumer does not deliberately change the order of retrieval
