Well I have just contacted my friend at Candle and he says that he doesn't believe it is a joke. ...so I stand corrected.

It is an interesting acquistion especially on a MQ side of things. I wonder if the support packs will be discontinued where there is cross-over?

since this is a very hot topic and no I don't believe it's an april fools day joke as
a) the financial concequences would be too big (SEC inquiry at least!) and b) I don't think there is anyone at IBM board with that kind of humor!
If they had they would have bought Microsoft today

but to add my 2 cents... this is IMHO not at all good for Candles MQ department.

I fear the following will happen after the acquisition:
- either Omegamon will be renamed to Tivoli MQ Adapter or is likely to get lost in the IBM cloud forever...
- Candle development staff will be scattered over IBM's labs
- Candle services staff will be scattered over IBM global services
- Candles product line will be ripped apart and absorbed by IBM product lines.

[when the dust settles I'll split off the discussion part to the General discussion forum and just leave the announcement in this forum]

:)

Maybe it will be canbm.com or ibmdle.com...

But hopefully it will still be <something>.com, and you won't have to change it to kumar at monster.com... or kumar at hotjobs.com ...

Well to really stir the rumor mill, here's what I have learned.

After contacting a few colleagues at various large MQ vendors, whom then contacted their IBM VP buddies, basically, all replies came back as IBM was buying Candle for the OS/390 stuff (i.e. Omegamon) and shelving the rest!!!

The info is not directly from IBM but given IBM's Tivoli MQ push during the last little while, I would say it is probably true.

On a different note (but probably relevent), I got an email today from an agency looking for 4 MQ people. I will post it in the job section or have him post it.

Regards,
Roger Lacroix

Well, it appears the first half of what I said is true (or at least reported!!).

ComputerWorld has the following headline:
IBM to buy Candle Corp. for mainframe management

Thank you for everybody's concern. I also once thought it was an April Fool Joke. As a Candle employee who does a lots of MQ consultancy and loves Omegamon XE for WMQ and WMQI products, I am equally worried about the future of these products and my talented colleagues once we merge with IBM ...

it did sound a bit odd or out of the blue so to speak, but given the consequences of such news, highly unlikely to be a joke..

look at it from the positive side, you can either spend lot's of time "converting" to whatever is still there, OR
find a whole new career inside IBM (that to me is still one of the strengths of that company!) OR
you can make a good living off the knowledge you have in the MQ arena

an update ... quoted from an invitation to Tivoli Tech...

Quote:
On June 7, Candle Corp. was acquired by IBM, becoming part of IBM Tivoli software. This acquisition will provide Candle customers with an enhanced set of end-to-end automation solutions for managing enterprise infrastructures.

As part of the transition to Tivoli software, I am pleased to announce the joining of Candle with the 2004 IBM Tivoli Technical User Conference. The conference brings together systems management professionals from Candle and Tivoli software to meet with peers, share experiences and network with other product experts and executives. Attendees will get an in-depth look at the OMEGAMON®, AUTOMATED FACILITIES™ and Tivoli software management solutions in a series of technical solution-oriented tracks and sessions.

As part of the conference agenda, OMEGAMON users can attend separate general sessions covering product roadmaps and tracks covering introductory to advanced topics for zSeries system performance and automation. Performance and availability session topics will cover OMEGAMON solutions, and tips and tricks for managing z/OS, OS/390, CICS, IMS, DB2, Linux, mainframe networks, IBM Cryptographic Coprocessors and storage. There will also be sessions covering the OMEGAMON product roadmap, and we'll showcase the latest product developments at the solutions center.

notice the not mentioning of MQ/WebSphere BI versus CICS, IMS and DB2...

Propably IBM will use candle's monitoring methods and will built in monitor with the MQ product . I hope MQ 6 or 7 will come with built in Monitoring.

Also, since IBM has more customer base ,they can give built in solutions and charge clients a small fraction enhancing the stability, availability , recoverability of MQSeries , taking of load from MQ Specialists.

It sounds great to me to think like that. But time will .....................

Personally I would not hold my breath!
within IBM (at least when I was working there...) anything to do with monitoring and configuration has to come from the Tivoli brand...
I don't think much has changed...

It's not at all in IBM's interest to put that kind of functionality as built-in into a product. Unlike Microsoft, any attempt to put anything built-in into
a product will be seen as an attempt to 'propriatise' (i mean make it more propriatary...) the product.
Especially because of platform reach and customer acceptance I don't think IBM will hand out that 'argument' to the competition
kingsley wrote:

As said before IBM's desicion to buy Candle had nothing to do with MQ and
the future will prove that.

I hope IBM proves me wrong, on the other hand with Candle gone and not a lot of customers willing to 'migrate' to Tivoli this will provide a good opportunity to other smaller MQ players like MQSoftware and the likes.

In case anyone wonders... yes I am breaking my own moderator's rules for this forum (all rules are meant to be broken at least once...)
So by the end of this week I'll clean up this topic and split it to the 'news' part and the 'general discussion' part...
