Set vi into edit hex mode, something like this, IMS:
[esc] :%!xxd |
'xxd' is part of 'vim', not 'vi', and more likely to be available on Linux than AIX.
'xxd' is an external program; it can run directly from the command line, without an editor. |

MO71 ... can do many useful things very easily. |
MO71 is a perfectly fine tool, but so is amqsbcg0, xxd, od, etc. Each has their own strengths and weaknesses. Sometimes, command line tools are preferable. Why relegate them to the "stone age"?

However, if the immediate goal is to resolve some other issue, and the OP has already complained that time spent learning a new tool is getting in the way of that, then maybe it's a good idea to set that aside for a few days, and focus on the problem at hand. |

The problem at hand is that the OP doesn't have one of the basic skills required for problem-determination, namely: the ability to examine the application data. And since not all characters are non-display/non-printable, a hex editing tool is required.
WMQ comes with several of these already discussed here - WMQ Explorer, amqsbcg(c). Many similar tools are free-ware downloadable from IBM, and elsewhere on Mr. Internet. _________________ I like deadlines. I like to wave as they pass by.

I actually like these problems as an exercise in problem solving. Had a tough one recently - only resolved when IBM added a code page to the MQ JVM for us. However if you can't even get MO71 to work... why not call IBM to help you on the conversion issue? |

Yes, one of the three tools in our sysadmin toolkit: 1) ask someone who knows more than you; 2) look it up; 3) contact the vendor. _________________ I like deadlines. I like to wave as they pass by.
