I have a customer who's at v8. There isn't a migration path so I'm going to COLD start their MQ's.

My concern for production upgrades are messages left in Q's and not consumed (ya I know get them consumed). I was thinking of using COPY/SCOPY for the Q's that have messages. So couple of scenarios

1) SCOPY/COPY with v9.1.5 version or v8 of the PAGESET's or Q's?

2) Does SCOPY/COPY need the BSDS to maintain consistency? I couldn't find a reference that it does. Since I have to COLD start copying the BSDS contents to v9.1.5 BSDS isn't possible.

3) Just use one various utilities that copy messages to sequential flat files and reload the Q's (you change various MQ Header fields with this approach).

Any suggestions or problems with these approaches?

This approach does not need to change the MQ Header fields. Use QLOAD and you will maintain the MQMD and any other headers when you reload the messages.

If I copy over the messages in SYSTEM.CHANNEL.INITQ, will that help prevent any SEQUENCE number errors? Thanks for any input!

No, but the SYSTEM.CHANNEL.SYNCQ will on z/OS.

I suspect you discard any messages on the SYSTEM.CHANNEL.INITQ. Trigger messages will be recreated as required.

Cheers,
Morag

Just a FYI...this worked out very well. Converted all their MQMs with no issues.
