Greetings...

the documentation says when adding a qmgr as PR in a cluster, one CLSSDR channel to EITHER of the two FR qmgrs must be created.

Is there a reason not to create one CLSSDR channel to each of the FR qmgrs?

For what purpose? If the primary FR fails, clustering software on a PR will automatically create a CLUSSDR channel to the remaining FR.

Thanks for clarifying! I have always just followed the manual, until I have a need to move a FR to a different qmgr. so came this question. Good to know. Never read about this capability in the manual though.

How to move an FR: https://www.ibm.com/docs/en/ibm-mq/9.0?topic=cluster-moving-full-repository-another-queue-manager

Just to clarify, the CLUSSDR channel to the remaining FR is not created when the primary FR fails, it is created when the PR first joins the cluster. If you use DISPLAY CLUSQMGR, you will see the PR has TWO CLUSSDR channels, one automatically created and one manually created.

All "cluster subscriptions" are made to TWO FRs all the time.

You are told only to make one manual one because using the model sent by the FR to the PR when it joins the cluster is more likely to be correct than a manual definition, so the fewer manual definitions the better. You obviously need to have a minimum of one manual definition because, you know, magic doesn't exist!

Cheers,
Morag

thank you Morag for clarifying!

So it's my understanding now that the automatically created the CLUSSDR is not the same thing as the manually created one. A new CLUSSDR channel is NOT automatically replicated to point to a new FR.

As the manual states: after changing a FR qmgr, one must still "Replace all other manually defined cluster-sender channels that point to the old FR on all queue managers in the cluster with channels that point to either of the new FR qmgrs."

We still need to do the work...

Yes, there is work to move/deprecate a cluster qmgr.

For every gmgr in the cluster there must be one manually defined CLUSRCVR that points back to itself, and one manually defined CLUSSDR to its FR.

The manually defined CLUSSDR will be replaced by a CLUSSDRB type channel indicating both manually-defined and automatically replaced.

When deprecating a qmgr from a cluster, the old CLUSSDR and CLUSRCVR channels need to be removed from the cluster.
