Hello, experts,

I'm a WMB & WMQ on aix admin. We just had an disagreement with CICS on zos admin. Here's the story:

In our env, WMB requests HTTP service hosted by CICS on zos. Periodically connection limit on CICS is reached. And we found CICS is setting max connection per port to 300. They have 6 ports in total.

On the distributed systems, IHS provides HTTP service as well. On a backward host with IHS, I set MaxClient (max connection limit) to 2000 or even 5000 and don't observe significant resource consumption increase. Is it wise to set max connection to only 300 on zos?

Is there a best practice guide from IBM addressing the issue? I googled and looked into the infocenter. They just explain how to set that value, but are not giving a best practice guide.

Best-practice is to provision resources adequate to meet service-level agreement requirements, including peak loads. Are you/they missing service-level agreements? Or, just reaching the 300 threshold? Is anyone complaining?

You might want to look here http://publib.boulder.ibm.com/httpserv/ihsdiag/ihs_performance.html#Out_of_the_box_tuning_concerns for some explanation of configurations settings.

What is their explanation for the 300 value? Given the usual horsepower of the mainframe, 300 seems low.

Thanks for the reply.

About the service level agreement, we're in a same company, and belong to different IT departments, and I don't think we make such agreements ...

Is there any official doc about CICS recommending http connection settings? As a matter of fact I represent the complaining side on the issue... I'm trying to get better prepared before further challenging them...

The last time I talked about raising the value, the zos cics support told me, "it takes CPU time\memory and a lot more to allow for incoming network traffic. The resource can be limited. So I'm not increasing the value."

Then I replied "On aix an IHS installed on power5 with only 2 CPUs holds service for 2000 symutanous traffic at ease. zos could hold only 300?"

He did not answer this question, but replied "I have open 6 ports. If one is not working, you could connect to another one"

I said "If CICS for zos does need the load balance done, it's not supposed to be done on the client side." (In our scenario, WMB works as a HTTP client and CICS for zos is the http server)

That's all for the story so far. I don't think our CICS support has really looked into this. I'm trying to gather more data and raise this question once again some time. 300 is so not enough for our biz pressure.
